Homes with a past, abandoned landscapes to explore, and a scary TV series to start watching over the weekend.
3 Homes
Highlands Mansion (Denver, CO)

Book a room in this bed & breakfast landmark mansion for around $165 a night, if you dare…
Located near some of Denver’s best restaurants, this mansion was formerly by John Mouat, a super-wealthy lumber baron in the area. Mouat built the Victorian home in the 1890s to show off the wood his company sold (with each room held a different type) and lived in it until the neighborhood started becoming a little sketch.

This prompted Mouat and his family to move and the building was eventually converted into apartments. It wasn’t until Kara Kanoch and her friend Marianna Weaver (two tenants of the complex) were murdered in the building in what police thought was a robbery gone wrong.
They never caught the killers. Rumor has it to this day that two spirits of the women are present in the Valentine Suite, the room where they died…
Historic Adobe Home in NM Ghosttown (Truth or Consequences, NM)

Yes, the town this is near is actually called Truth or Consequences!
But where this property actually sits is on the old ghost town of Cuchillo. You can rent a private room in the Old Cuchillo Hotel here for about $65.
According to the owner,
“the property once served as a stagecoach stop for the mines in Chloride, NM, and the railroad at Engle, NM, and the old hotel has given shelter to travelers in the area for over a century.…”
He also explains the history of the overall property,
“The historic hotel building is set on the Old Cuchillo Bar property, which has housed the old saloon, general store, post office, mercantile, stables, and hotel since being established as a stagecoach stop in the mid-1800s.”

Take a step back in time and explore this ghost town!
Historic Civil War Farm House (Gettysburg, PA)

This isn’t just a Civil War farmhouse.
Following the historic Battle of Gettysburg, the house and barn were swiftly converted into a field hospital…
If you’re looking for haunted vibes, then this is probably for you. This is what the owner has to say…
“I will be your only "living" host, but there are many others who reside with me. They have lived at the farm for many many years, some for hundreds of years. Yes, the house is haunted, but they are all friendly! I have been here for 36 years and have lots of interesting stories that I'd be happy to share with you if you are interested...”

Visitors can choose from a large bedroom with a queen bed and private shower, or stay in a smaller bedroom with 2 twin beds (up to 4 people).

HBO’s Chernobyl (2019)
What’s scarier than human-made disasters?
I realize many have probably seen this show, but it seems like a good time to rewatch and see what can happen when corruption and ignorance occur at the highest levels.
Watch this series to see a real-time account of what happened right before, and after, one of the most painful incidents humans have created on the Earth.
